Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh — a joint venture between Foxconn and HCL. Describing it as a milestone in India’s technological journey, the Prime Minister said that a “Made in India” chip is crucial for building a developed and self-reliant nation.

Addressing the gathering, Modi emphasized that India’s vision of becoming a developed country depends on strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities, especially in strategic sectors like semiconductors. “Developed India will be possible only if it is self-reliant. A Made in India chip is very important for developed India,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of critical minerals, Modi underlined that rare earth elements play a vital role in semiconductor production. He said India is taking decisive steps to secure access to these essential resources and build strong rare earth corridors to support the industry.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the remarkable growth of India’s electronics sector over the past decade. He noted that electronics manufacturing has increased sixfold in the last 11 years, exports have grown eight times, and mobile manufacturing has expanded 28 times. He described “Make in India” as a powerful and globally recognized brand.

Modi further explained that India is adopting a twin-track strategy in technology development — advancing both software and hardware capabilities simultaneously. “India is working on both aspects of software and hardware. It is a proud moment that Uttar Pradesh is also becoming part of the semiconductor ecosystem,” he said.

Referring to the recent Global AI Impact Summit held in Delhi, the Prime Minister said that global leaders witnessed India’s growing strength in artificial intelligence and technology. He emphasized that India is striving to enhance its processing power infrastructure to compete with leading global economies.

“India has no time to pause or slow down,” Modi said, reiterating his call for accelerated development. He added that the country has gained significant momentum since the beginning of 2026, and the establishment of the semiconductor plant marks another historic step toward technological self-sufficiency.

The Foxconn-HCL facility in Jewar is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s semiconductor supply chain and boosting its ambitions to become a global electronics manufacturing hub.
