Tamil Nadu witnessed a disturbing incident after a Class 12 student at a government school in Kumbakonam died from severe injuries sustained during an attack by a group of juniors. The shocking assault, carried out by 14 Class 11 students, took place on December 4 at Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School in Patteeswaram.
Brutal Assault Inside School Premises
According to police, the clash began over an internal dispute between the two classes. During the confrontation, the group of Class 11 students allegedly struck the Class 12 boy on his head using a wooden stick, causing a critical head injury.
Teachers alerted the boy’s parents immediately, following which he was rushed to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later shifted to a private hospital in Thanjavur, where he underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
Student Succumbs to Injuries; All Accused Arrested
Despite medical efforts, the victim died at around 2:30 am on Sunday, police confirmed.
All 14 accused students have been arrested and sent to a juvenile home.
Patteeswaram Police stated that they originally filed a case of attempt to murder, but following the post-mortem examination, the case will be modified to murder charges.
Growing Concern Over School Violence
The incident has triggered outrage and deep concern among parents, educators, and local authorities. Calls for stronger supervision, stricter anti-violence protocols, and psychological counselling for students have intensified following this tragic case.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and whether failures in school monitoring contributed to the fatal attack.
