Zelensky Says Updated US Peace Plan Offers ‘Principles’ for Deeper Deal to End Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the “principles” of a revised US proposal to end the war with Russia could form the basis for deeper agreements, signalling cautious optimism as Washington pushes for a breakthrough in the nearly four-year conflict.

Speaking in his daily address on Tuesday, Zelensky confirmed that the updated US peace framework — modified after earlier criticism that it appeared “too favourable to Moscow” — has not yet been officially released but contains key ideas Ukraine can work with.

“The principles of this document can be expanded into deeper agreements,” Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine expects active partnership from the United States and direct engagement from President Donald Trump.

“Much depends on America, because Russia pays the greatest attention to American strength,” he added.

Talks Continue in Abu Dhabi

The US is currently holding discussions with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, part of ongoing back-channel efforts to explore a political resolution.

Earlier in the day, Zelensky told Kyiv’s international partners that Ukraine is willing to “move forward” with the framework prepared by Ukraine’s negotiating teams in Geneva, though certain “sensitive points” still need clarification.

According to his remarks, Zelensky also indicated he is ready to meet President Trump to discuss remaining issues directly.

Europe Must Be Included, Says Zelensky

The Ukrainian leader urged European governments to remain fully involved in the process, stressing that “security decisions about Europe must include Europe”.

The evolving proposal marks one of the most significant diplomatic developments since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
