Kannur–Abu Dhabi IndiGo Flight Diverted to Ahmedabad After Rare Volcanic Eruption in Ethiopia
An IndiGo flight operating from Kannur to Abu Dhabi (6E 1433) was diverted to Ahmedabad on Monday after a massive volcanic eruption in Ethiopia created a high-risk ash plume along the flight path. Authorities noted that this was the first volcanic eruption in the region in nearly 10,000 years, making it a rare and significant aviation hazard.
The Airbus aircraft landed safely in Ahmedabad. IndiGo later confirmed that a return flight to Kannur would be arranged to assist stranded passengers.
🌋 Airlines Issue Alerts Amid High Ash Presence
Akasa Air released a statement saying it is closely monitoring volcanic activity and assessing its potential impact on international flight routes. The airline added that it is continuously reviewing global aviation advisories, and all necessary safety precautions are being taken.
Indian aviation authorities are also on alert, tracking how the volcanic ash could impact flight operations around Delhi and Jaipur through Monday evening. Several airlines have already altered flight paths to avoid the ash cloud and ensure safe operations.
Volcanic ash is known to pose severe risks to aircraft engines, navigation systems, and visibility—prompting swift rerouting decisions by international carriers.
