IAF Pilot Namansh Syal Dies in Tejas Crash at Dubai Airshow; Wife Wing Commander Afshan Currently on Training Duty

Wing Commander Namansh Syal of the Indian Air Force, who tragically lost his life in the Tejas fighter jet crash during the Dubai International Airshow, is survived by his wife Afshan, their six-year-old daughter, and his parents. The accident occurred on Friday while he was performing a display flight at the event.

Syal, originally from Patiyalkar village in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, was posted at Sulur Air Force Station in Tamil Nadu as part of No. 3 Squadron. His unit was selected to participate in the prestigious international airshow.

Namansh Syal’s wife, Wing Commander Afshan, is also serving in the Indian Air Force. At the time of the accident, she was in Kolkata undergoing a training course. Their six-year-old daughter was staying with her grandparents in Sulur.

Family members said the news of the crash reached them unexpectedly. Syal’s father, Jagannath Syal, who served in the Army’s Medical Corps and later retired as a principal, said he learned of the tragedy while watching videos of the Dubai Airshow online. The incident has left the family and village community devastated.

The 34-year-old pilot had an exemplary academic and military background. He studied at Sainik School Sujanpur Tira and later joined the National Defence Academy in 2009. Known to be brilliant in studies and committed to service, he was on track for a promotion, according to relatives.

His parents are currently at Sulur Air Force Station near Coimbatore. Relatives described him as a dedicated officer whose death has deeply saddened the entire community.

The Indian Air Force released an emotional tribute on X, honouring Wing Commander Syal as:

“A dedicated fighter pilot and thorough professional, who served the nation with unwavering commitment, exceptional skill and an unyielding sense of duty.”

A video shared by the IAF showed uniformed personnel offering a ceremonial farewell as wreaths were placed beside his tricolour-wrapped coffin.

The cause of the Tejas crash is under investigation.
