Prashant Kishor Takes Full Responsibility for Jan Suraaj’s Bihar Poll Debacle, Announces Day-long ‘Maun Vrat’

Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor on Tuesday publicly accepted full responsibility for his party’s poor performance in the Bihar assembly elections, where it failed to secure even a single seat. Speaking in Patna, Kishor said the results reflected shortcomings in his own strategy and his inability to convince voters.

“The Failure Is Mine”

Kishor admitted that the setback was a direct result of his own approach.

“If the public did not show faith in us, then the responsibility is completely mine. I take that responsibility 100%,” he said.

Calling the Jan Suraaj campaign an “honest effort” that ended in “complete failure,” he added,

“Forget systemic change—we couldn’t even bring about a change in power.”

Even so, he maintained that his movement had contributed to reshaping political discussions in Bihar.

To Observe Day-Long ‘Maun Vrat’

As a gesture of moral accountability, Kishor announced he would undertake a day-long silent fast at Gandhi Bhitiharwa Ashram on November 20.

“I failed to explain to the people why they should vote for a new system. Therefore, as atonement, I will observe a silent fast,” he said.

Kishor emphasized that while his team may have made strategic mistakes, they avoided unethical tactics such as caste or religious polarization or bribing voters.

No Resignation—‘What Post Do I Hold?’

Responding to questions about whether he would resign after the defeat, Kishor dismissed the idea, noting that he holds no formal position within Jan Suraaj.

“What position am I holding that I should resign from?” he asked, drawing laughter at the press conference.

He clarified that his earlier statement about retiring if JD(U) crossed 25 seats had been misinterpreted. JD(U) won 85 seats in the election.

Calls on Modi and Nitish to Deliver

Kishor said the mandate must be respected, acknowledging that the NDA received strong public support.

“People have given the mandate to the NDA. Now it is on the shoulders of Modi and Nitish to fulfill their promises,” he said.

Despite the setback, Kishor vowed to continue his political efforts.

“We have received a setback, but we will rectify our mistakes and return stronger. There is no going back for us,” he concluded.
