The Pakistan government has officially handed over the security of the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team to the Pakistan Army, following heightened concerns after the Islamabad terror attack. The decision was confirmed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who stated that the team will now receive state-level, multi-layered protection.
Speaking to the media on Thursday night in Rawalpindi after meeting both squads at the stadium, Naqvi praised the Sri Lankan government and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for continuing the ODI tour despite security concerns. He revealed that several Sri Lankan players had been considering returning home following the attack, prompting urgent discussions between both nations.
Army, Rangers, and Police to Work Jointly
Naqvi explained that the enhanced security plan includes joint deployment of the Pakistan Army, Rangers, and local police, ensuring maximum safety for the visiting team throughout their stay.
He added:
“The positive outcome was only achieved through sustained engagement between Pakistani and Sri Lankan leadership.”
ODI Series Continues Despite Tensions
Pakistan is currently hosting Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series. The tour faced uncertainty after some Sri Lankan players expressed hesitation about remaining in the country due to the heightened threat environment.
However, following diplomatic assurances and Pakistan’s decision to elevate the team’s security level, the series is proceeding as scheduled.
