Tragedy struck on Saturday morning when a light aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Shellharbour Airport in New South Wales, Australia, killing all three people on board.

According to New South Wales Police, the crash occurred around 10 a.m. local time, roughly 85 kilometres south of Sydney. Authorities said that the aircraft caught fire upon impact but was quickly extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW personnel.

“Upon impacting with the ground, the aircraft caught on fire which was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW. Three people are confirmed deceased,” police said in an official statement.

Crash Site and Investigation

Aerial footage broadcast by ABC News Australia showed charred wreckage strewn across the runway, with emergency services surrounding the crash site.

Police have since established a crime scene, and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been notified to begin a formal investigation into the cause of the accident.

While the identities of the victims have not yet been released, local authorities confirmed that forensic officers are working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
