Truck Plunges Into Lake in Bengaluru at Midnight; Driver Dies After Vehicle Sinks

A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in Bengaluru, where a 12-wheeler truck carrying M-sand plunged into Bidaraguppe Lake near Attibele in Anekal, resulting in the death of its driver.

The deceased, identified as Mahesh Pawar — a native of Kalaburagi and resident of Sarjapur — was driving from Attibele to Sarjapur when the accident took place around 12:30 am. He was alone in the vehicle.

Other motorists who witnessed the truck veering off the narrow, pothole-ridden stretch of road and entering the lake immediately alerted the highway patrol team. Police inspector S. Raghavendra, on night duty, reached the site but said visibility was nearly zero due to complete darkness.

Officers aligned their jeeps and used their headlights to illuminate the lake, only to discover that the truck had sunk entirely. Hours later, fire and emergency services deployed a coracle to search manually using long bamboo sticks.

After nearly an hour of probing the lake’s 20-foot-deep waters, rescuers located the submerged vehicle lying about four feet below the surface. Attempts by local swimmers to trace the driver were unsuccessful. By morning, two cranes with 40-tonne and 14-tonne capacities were brought in to lift the truck. Mahesh’s body was found in the driver’s seat.

Police suspect poor road conditions, including deep potholes, narrow lanes and lack of proper signage, contributed to the truck’s wrong turn into the lake. Officers believe the vehicle should have veered slightly right on the lakebed road but instead went straight into the water.

The investigation is ongoing.
