Rahul Gandhi Says Gulf Conflict Reflects Global Power Rivalry, Warns of Economic Impact on India

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has described the escalating conflict in the Middle East as more than just a confrontation between Iran and the US-Israel alliance, arguing that it reflects a deeper geopolitical rivalry among global superpowers.

Speaking at an event in Idukki, Kerala, the Leader of the Opposition said the tensions should be viewed in the context of a broader power struggle involving the United States, China, and Russia in an increasingly multipolar world.

“A Conflict of Global Powers”

According to Gandhi, the war may appear on the surface as a regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, but the underlying dynamics involve larger strategic competition between major world powers.

He suggested that the rivalry between the United States and China, along with Russia’s involvement in global conflicts, forms part of a wider geopolitical contest playing out across multiple regions, including Iran and Ukraine.

Energy Security Concerns for India

Rahul Gandhi also raised concerns about the potential consequences of the conflict for India’s energy security, particularly as fighting in the Middle East continues to disrupt oil supply chains.

The conflict, which began escalating on February 28, has already caused significant instability in the region. Iran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting US bases and energy infrastructure across several Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.

Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

Gandhi highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route used for transporting oil and gas from the Middle East to global markets.

With Iran threatening to attack vessels passing through the narrow waterway, shipping activity in the region has been severely affected. Any prolonged disruption could have major implications for global energy supplies.

Possible Economic Impact on India

India imports a large share of its crude oil from the Middle East, making the country particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions.

Gandhi warned that reduced oil supply could push fuel prices higher in India, potentially triggering inflation and slowing economic growth.

He stressed that policymakers in India must remain cautious and carefully assess the country’s strategic position amid the rising tensions between global powers.

Call for Clear Foreign Policy Position

The Congress leader also emphasised the importance of India maintaining a clear and balanced foreign policy stance.

He noted that India faces a complex geopolitical situation, with China along its borders while also maintaining strategic ties with the United States.

Given the growing tensions among major global powers, Gandhi cautioned that India must carefully determine its diplomatic and strategic position to avoid being drawn into broader geopolitical conflicts.
