Bengaluru’s already congested Outer Ring Road (ORR) came to a complete standstill on Tuesday evening after a BMTC (Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation) bus broke down near Ecospace Junction, crippling traffic movement across the city’s busy tech corridor.
The Bengaluru Traffic Police issued an advisory on X (formerly Twitter) at 4:43 p.m., alerting commuters about slow-moving traffic from Ecospace towards Marathahalli, affecting key stretches such as Kadubeesanahalli, Devarabisanahalli, and Bellandur.
“A BMTC bus breakdown and jammed wheels caused the traffic congestion,”
confirmed Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru, to Moneycontrol.
The breakdown triggered a ripple effect, leaving thousands of office commuters stranded for hours along one of the city’s most crucial IT corridors.
Commuters Vent Frustration Online
Several Bengaluru residents took to X to express their anger over the gridlock.
User @skammari23 wrote, “Just one bus breaks down and the entire ORR comes to a halt – 5+ km of traffic jam! I’ve been stuck for 2 hours and haven’t even moved a kilometre.”
Another commuter, Prathibha Sastry, called on companies to allow remote work, saying, “Please advise companies in ORR to stop forcing work from office till the roads are ready for this traffic. Stuck at Marathahalli for over an hour. This is exhausting and bad for health.”
Traffic Pattern & Contributing Factors
According to traffic officials, midweek days see the heaviest congestion on ORR, as many tech employees skip office on Mondays and Fridays to extend their weekends.
Apart from the bus breakdown, other factors contributed to Tuesday’s chaos:
- Ongoing whitetopping work and Metro construction around HSR Layout.
- Closure of service roads between 9th and 5th Main Roads since October 6, 2025, for Namma Metro construction—expected to continue for 45 days.
- Vehicles from Iblur Junction to Silk Board were being diverted via 14th Main Road flyover or HSR Layout’s internal roads, further choking smaller routes.
The incident once again underscores the fragile traffic infrastructure on Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road — home to major IT parks such as Ecospace, Ecoworld, and RMZ Infinity, employing over 1.5 lakh professionals.
