The ruling Mahayuti alliance registered a resounding victory in the Maharashtra local body elections, winning 207 out of 288 president posts of municipal councils and town panchayats, according to final results released by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday night.

The elections, held in two phases on December 2 and December 20, covered 246 municipal councils and 42 town panchayats across the state. Early trends on Sunday had already indicated a decisive edge for the Mahayuti, which was later confirmed by the official figures.

Within the Mahayuti alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single-largest winner, securing 117 posts. The Shiv Sena won 53 posts, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) claimed 37 posts.

The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a significant setback. The Indian National Congress managed to win 28 posts, followed by Shiv Sena (UBT) with nine and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) with seven.

Apart from the major parties, four seats were won by parties registered with the SEC, 28 seats went to registered but unrecognised political parties, and five posts were secured by independent candidates.

Celebrations broke out across the Mahayuti camp as the scale of the victory became evident. Narendra Modi thanked the people of Maharashtra, saying the results reflected public trust in people-centric development.

“Maharashtra stands firmly with development. The people have once again placed their faith in the BJP and Mahayuti’s vision,” the Prime Minister said, also praising party workers for their grassroots efforts.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the mandate as a strong endorsement of the alliance’s leadership and governance, calling the results a “trailer” for the upcoming municipal corporation elections.

Former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and NCP leader Ajit Pawar also welcomed the outcome, terming it a clear signal of public support ahead of future electoral battles in the state.
