The price revision comes amid growing uncertainty in global energy markets and logistical challenges affecting international shipping routes. Despite the increase, government officials have confirmed that there is no shortage of LPG supply in India and that adequate arrangements are in place to meet consumer demand.

Kolkata₹939.00

Why LPG Prices Increased in March

The latest revision represents the largest monthly increase in LPG prices in nearly a year. Between April 2025 and March 2026, domestic cooking gas prices have increased by ₹60 overall.

LPG pricing in India is influenced by several factors, including:

  • Global crude oil and LPG prices
  • Transportation and distribution costs
  • Government policies and subsidy structures
  • Exchange rate fluctuations
  • Supply chain disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions

Recent instability in global energy markets has added pressure to fuel supply chains worldwide.

Is There an LPG Shortage in India?

Government officials have clarified that there is no shortage of LPG supply in the country.

According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refining) at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, there have been no “dry-out” situations reported anywhere in India.

Authorities noted that LPG bookings have recently increased as consumers rushed to secure cylinders due to concerns about global supply disruptions. However, officials said this spike in demand is largely driven by panic buying rather than an actual shortage.

Impact of Strait of Hormuz Disruption

Energy markets globally have been closely monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global oil supplies.

The temporary closure of this route for commercial shipping has raised concerns over energy logistics worldwide. However, Indian authorities have indicated that the country has successfully diversified its crude oil import routes.

Currently, around 70% of India’s crude oil imports are arriving through alternative routes, compared to about 55% before the geopolitical tensions escalated.

India Strengthening Energy Security

India consumes approximately 55 lakh barrels of crude oil per day. Officials have confirmed that the country has already secured sufficient supplies beyond the volumes typically transported through the Strait of Hormuz.

India now sources crude oil from around 40 countries, significantly higher than the 27 supplier nations in 2006–07, reducing dependence on any single region.

Refineries Operating at High Capacity

Government sources say refineries across the country are currently operating at high utilisation levels, with some facilities even running above 100% capacity.

This has helped ensure a steady supply of petroleum products and LPG cylinders nationwide.

Authorities have also prioritised LPG supply for critical sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Government Suggests Alternative Fuels

As a precautionary measure amid global supply uncertainty, the Environment Ministry has advised temporary use of alternative fuels such as:

  • Biomass
  • Kerosene
  • Coal

The advisory is expected to remain in place for about one month, aiming to reduce pressure on LPG demand and maintain stable energy availability.
