Karnataka Political Tension Returns: DK Shivakumar Hints at “Change in the State” Amid CM Row

The political tension surrounding the Chief Minister’s post in Karnataka has resurfaced, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar making a fresh remark hinting at a potential leadership change. Despite repeated efforts by the Congress high command to project unity, Shivakumar’s latest comments have once again sparked speculation.

Shivakumar’s Hint: “Prepare for a Change in the State”

Speaking at a public event, Shivakumar delivered a philosophical address on opportunity, responsibility and leadership. However, one line stood out:
“Prepare for a change in the state.”

Although he did not directly reference the Chief Minister’s chair, the statement—made in Kannada—has intensified discussions about the unresolved power-sharing agreement reportedly made after Congress’ 2023 election victory.

Background: The Promise of Rotational CM

For weeks, Shivakumar’s supporters have been vocal, holding meetings and even travelling to Delhi to demand that the Congress leadership honour an alleged promise:
➡️ DK Shivakumar to become CM mid-way through the government’s 5-year term.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge repeatedly assured that the high command would speak to both leaders. Meanwhile, Shivakumar maintained a strategic silence while allowing his faction to amplify the message.

Unity Scenes: Breakfast Meeting at Siddaramaiah’s Home

To cool rising tensions, CM Siddaramaiah invited Shivakumar for breakfast at his residence. The two shared photos on social media, projecting warmth and partnership.

After the meeting, both leaders held a joint press conference.

Siddaramaiah stated:

“There are no differences between us and there will be no differences in the future.”

He further said their joint focus is on:

  • Local body elections, and
  • Winning the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections.

Shivakumar echoed the same, stating they will abide by whatever the Congress high command decides.

But Is the Row Really Over?

Despite the show of unity, Shivakumar’s statement asking supporters to “prepare for a change” suggests that internal power dynamics remain unresolved.

Congress insiders say the high command is walking a tightrope, balancing Siddaramaiah’s popularity and Shivakumar’s organisational strength. For now, both leaders have agreed to maintain public peace, but political observers believe the CM row is far from settled.
