India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly set to adjust his international schedule following India’s T20 World Cup victory, shifting his focus toward One Day Internationals (ODIs) as the team prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
According to reports, the Indian fast bowler will likely reduce his appearances in T20 Internationals over the next 18 months as part of a strategic workload management plan designed to keep him fit for major tournaments.
Focus on ODI World Cup Preparations
Bumrah is expected to play a crucial role in India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup, making the 50-over format a key priority during the upcoming cycle.
Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suggest that India could play around 30 to 35 ODI matches before the next World Cup, and the team management intends to ensure Bumrah remains available for the majority of those games.
Maintaining the pacer’s fitness remains a major priority given his importance to India’s bowling attack.
Managing Fitness After Injury Concerns
Bumrah has previously faced serious injury setbacks, including a recurring back injury that forced him to miss the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and the Champions Trophy last year.
With more than a decade in international cricket, Bumrah is yet to win either the ODI World Cup or the World Test Championship, despite reaching the finals in both tournaments.
Because of this, the Indian team management is expected to carefully manage his playing schedule across formats.
Role Across Formats
While the focus will shift toward ODIs, Bumrah will continue to remain a key figure in Test cricket, especially with India targeting a strong run in the ICC World Test Championship.
His ability to deliver in crucial moments makes him one of the most valuable bowlers in modern cricket.
Bumrah recently finished as joint-highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup with 16 wickets, further cementing his reputation as one of the world’s best fast bowlers.
IPL and Future Plans
Before returning to international cricket, Bumrah will represent the Mumbai Indians in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, where he is expected to feature in at least 14 matches during the tournament.
After the IPL season, India’s management will begin implementing a structured workload strategy to balance Bumrah’s appearances across formats.
Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir, National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman, and India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill are reportedly working on a long-term roadmap for the team’s development leading up to the 2027 World Cup.
India is expected to play around 15 ODIs and 15 T20Is in the upcoming calendar, with additional fixtures likely to be included in the next Future Tours Programme.
For Bumrah, the strategy is clear — remain fit, focus on key tournaments, and lead India’s pace attack in the years leading to the next global event.
