India Vice-Captain Shreyas Iyer in ICU After Rib Injury Causes Internal Bleeding During Australia ODI

Sydney: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding caused by a rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday.

The 30-year-old cricketer sustained the injury while taking a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey, running backward from point. Shortly after returning to the dressing room, Iyer complained of severe abdominal pain, prompting an immediate medical response.

⚕️ What Happened

In an official statement released on Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said:

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”

Scans later revealed a laceration injury to his spleen, causing internal bleeding. The BCCI confirmed that Iyer is medically stable and recovering, with the Indian Team Doctor stationed in Sydney to monitor his daily progress.

A PTI report cited sources saying that Iyer’s condition became critical shortly after he left the field as his vital parameters fluctuated, leading doctors to admit him to the ICU.

“He’s been in the ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately,” a source revealed.

🩺 Current Condition

Medical teams from both India and Australia are jointly supervising his treatment.
According to doctors, Iyer’s condition is currently stable, but he will stay under observation for at least 2–7 days, depending on his recovery rate.

“Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” a PTI source said.

⏱️ Recovery Timeline

While Iyer was initially expected to miss about three weeks, the discovery of internal bleeding may extend his recovery period.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover. It’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” a source added.

Iyer will remain in Sydney for at least a week before doctors assess if he is fit to travel back to India.

🏏 Impact on Upcoming Matches

The injury casts uncertainty over Iyer’s participation in the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30.

Before his setback, Iyer was in excellent form, scoring 72 runs in two ODIs against Australia, including a crucial 61 off 77 balls in the second match at Adelaide.

With 2,917 runs in 73 ODIs at an average of 47.81, including five centuries and 23 half-centuries, Iyer has been a key figure in India’s middle order. His recent performances in the ICC Champions Trophy—where he was India’s top scorer—cemented his place as one of India’s most dependable batsmen.

As India prepare for the five-match T20 series against Australia beginning in Canberra on Wednesday, Iyer’s absence will be deeply felt both on and off the field.
