India Carry Extra Pressure in T20 World Cup Final Against England, Says Dinesh Karthik

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik believes defending champions India will carry greater pressure when they face England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final.

Speaking during the JioStar Media Day, Karthik said expectations surrounding the Indian team are significantly higher because they are playing at home and enter the match as the defending champions.

India Enter Final as Favourites

According to Karthik, India’s recent performances and their status as hosts mean they will naturally start the final with the burden of expectation.

“It’s a home World Cup and India are the defending champions. Considering the cricket they’ve played leading into the tournament, they are the team everyone is chasing. That naturally brings extra pressure because they are expected to win,” Karthik said.

He also pointed out that England may enter the match with slightly less pressure, as they have faced difficulties in Mumbai earlier in the tournament.

The Harry Brook-led England side struggled in two earlier matches at the venue, narrowly escaping a defeat against Nepal and later suffering a 30-run loss to West Indies.

Because of that, Karthik believes England could approach the final with a mindset of having less to lose compared to India.

Backing India’s Top Order

Karthik also expressed confidence in India’s top-order batters, urging the team management to continue backing Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan despite inconsistent performances.

“In a tournament like the World Cup, you must trust the players who have brought you this far,” Karthik said.

He emphasised that giving players confidence before such a big match can make a significant difference.

“I believe they should stick with Abhishek, Sanju, and Ishan Kishan at the top and give them the belief they need to perform on the big day,” he added.

India’s Road to the Final

India have had a strong campaign in the tournament, winning six of their seven matches so far. Their only defeat came against South Africa, who beat them by 76 runs in the Super 8 stage.

Following that setback, India recovered well. In a crucial match against West Indies, they needed a victory to secure a place in the semi-finals.

A brilliant unbeaten 97 from Sanju Samson helped India register a comfortable five-wicket win, confirming their spot in the knockout stage.

Despite their success, the team is still searching for a complete performance where batting, bowling, and fielding click together.

England’s Strong Run

England have also enjoyed a strong campaign under captain Harry Brook, winning six of their seven matches in the tournament.

Their only defeat came earlier in the group stage against West Indies, but the team has since built momentum with a five-match winning streak.

With both sides entering the final in impressive form, the clash promises to be a high-intensity contest between two of the world’s strongest T20 teams.
