Venezuelan opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has hailed India as a global role model for democracy and extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit a “free Venezuela” once democracy is restored in her country.
In a televised interview, Machado, who has been at the forefront of Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement for over two decades, called India “a great democracy” and “an inspiration for the world.” She expressed hope that India would play an active role in supporting Venezuela’s return to democratic governance.
“I want to speak with Prime Minister Modi and invite him to a free Venezuela soon,” Machado said, adding that India’s democratic traditions and Gandhian philosophy of non-violence can serve as guiding principles for her nation’s struggle.
“Peace is not weakness; Gandhi showed this to the whole world,” she added.
Venezuela’s Political Crisis
Referring to Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections, Machado alleged that the opposition coalition secured a landslide victory, but President Nicolás Maduro’s government annulled the results.
She said the opposition had extended an offer for Maduro to step down peacefully, but the government instead launched a nationwide crackdown on dissent and activists.
“The people have spoken, but the regime refuses to listen. Our victory was clear, and our demand is simple — freedom through peaceful means,” Machado stated.
International Backing and Hope for Global Partnerships
Machado emphasised the importance of international support in Venezuela’s democratic transition. She noted that former US President Donald Trump remains among her key allies and expressed optimism that sustained global pressure could compel Maduro’s regime to respect the people’s mandate.
“With the support of democracies around the world, we can make Maduro understand that his time is up,” she said.
India–Venezuela Collaboration: A Future Vision
Highlighting potential bilateral cooperation, Machado invited India to invest in Venezuela’s energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications sectors once democracy is restored.
“India’s democratic experience and institutional strength can guide Venezuela as we rebuild our republic. Our countries share values of freedom and resilience,” she noted.
Machado said India’s leadership on the global stage could be pivotal in strengthening democratic alliances across continents.
‘Democracy Should Never Be Taken Lightly’
In her closing remarks, the Nobel laureate urged nations to uphold and protect democratic values.
“Democracy should never be taken lightly. The responsibility of a large democracy like India is immense — the world looks to it as an example,” she said.
Machado’s remarks have resonated globally, drawing attention to Venezuela’s ongoing struggle for democracy and renewed calls for international solidarity led by democratic nations like India.
