The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Tamil Nadu, predicting heavy rainfall across several districts, including Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and Thoothukudi, over the next two days.
According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in multiple regions, while light to moderate showers are likely across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal through Monday evening.
The weather department noted that moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are enhancing rainfall activity, particularly over southern and western districts.
Heavy Rain Expected in Multiple Districts
From Tuesday to Wednesday, the IMD has forecast heavy rain in Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, and Thanjavur districts. Simultaneously, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, and Tenkasi may also witness intense downpours during the same period.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai added that on Thursday, the wet spell is expected to continue in Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts.
Officials have cautioned residents in low-lying areas to be alert as heavy rain could lead to waterlogging and disrupt transport in urban and rural zones.
Chennai Weather Outlook
For Chennai and its suburbs, the RMC predicts isolated thunderstorms with light to moderate rain on Monday evening. Despite the cloudy conditions, no specific warnings have been issued for fishermen, as wind speeds along the coast are expected to remain within safe limits.
Weather experts have attributed the ongoing wet spell to the northeast monsoon, which remains active over the southern peninsular region. The rainfall could also bring temporary relief to drought-affected districts, although localized flooding remains a concern.
