As the festival of lights approaches, investors are gearing up for one of the most awaited annual events in the Indian stock market — Diwali Muhurat Trading 2025. The special one-hour session, held every year on Diwali, marks the symbolic beginning of the new financial year under the traditional Hindu Samvat calendar.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will host the Muhurat Trading session on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, with a change in timing this year — moving from the usual evening slot to the afternoon for the first time in several years.

🕒 Muhurat Trading 2025 Schedule

  • Pre-open session: 1:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
  • Main trading session: 1:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
  • Post-close modification: till 2:55 p.m.

Both exchanges will remain closed for regular trading on Diwali Laxmi Pujan and again on October 22 (Balipratipada).

What Is Muhurat Trading?

Muhurat Trading refers to a special one-hour trading window observed annually on Diwali. The term “muhurat” denotes an auspicious time in the Hindu calendar, believed to bring prosperity and good fortune to investors.

Though largely symbolic, trades placed during this session are real and fully settled under standard exchange rules. Many investors treat it as a lucky time to begin new investments, often buying quality blue-chip stocks instead of speculative ones.

Tradition and History

The custom began in 1957, when the BSE introduced Muhurat Trading to coincide with Chopda Pujan — the ritual of opening new account books on Diwali, especially popular among business families in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.

The NSE later adopted the practice, keeping the festive spirit alive in India’s increasingly digital markets. Over time, the session has evolved into a blend of ritual, sentiment, and financial optimism, often accompanied by sweets, greetings, and waived brokerage fees from trading firms.

Who Can Participate?

Muhurat Trading is open to all investors — from first-time traders placing their inaugural orders to long-term investors reaffirming faith in the markets. Brokerage platforms sometimes offer zero brokerage and festive incentives during this session.

The session is more symbolic than speculative, emphasizing good fortune, continuity, and optimism for the new Samvat year.
