Tamil Nadu is gearing up for another spell of rainfall, though not as intense as the recent downpours. Weather experts and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have issued fresh updates, including a yellow alert for several districts across the state.
Chennai’s Heavy Rain Phase Ends for 2025
Renowned private meteorologist Pradeep John, popularly known as the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, announced that the city’s period of heavy rainfall has concluded for the year.
Speaking at a public event, he clarified that Chennai will experience only moderate rain on December 16 and 17, marking the end of this season’s major rain spells.
Moderate Showers Expected Across Delta and Southern Regions
John further noted that moderate rainfall may occur on December 9 and 10 across areas including:
- Puducherry
- Cuddalore delta
- Parts of southern Tamil Nadu
While Chennai is unlikely to see another heavy spell, light to moderate rain is expected to continue in the delta regions and southern districts.
Cyclone Titva: Why Sunday’s Rain Shifted to Monday
Addressing Cyclone Titva, John explained that the expected heavy rain initially forecast for Sunday shifted to Monday.
- Areas around Chennai recorded up to 20 cm of rainfall,
- Kanchipuram and Vellore saw lower-than-forecast totals.
He added that the system’s overall rainfall output aligned with cyclone expectations.
He also confirmed that the chance of a new cyclone forming remains low at this time.
IMD Forecast: Rain & Thunderstorms Till December 13
The Chennai Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rainfall across many parts of Tamil Nadu until December 13.
Coastal districts are likely to witness:
- Rain
- Thunderstorms
- Gusty winds
IMD also warned that continuous rainfall could lead to waterlogging and power outages, urging residents to follow safety guidelines.
Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Districts
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the following districts:
- Chennai
- Coimbatore
- Theni
- Vellore
- Puducherry
- Karaikal
- Sivaganga
- Ranipet
- Chengalpattu
These areas are expected to witness varying intensities of rainfall in the coming days.
