A bomb threat email targeting five of India’s busiest airports — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Trivandrum — triggered a high alert on Wednesday morning, prompting immediate security checks and investigations.
According to aviation officials, the threat was received via an email allegedly linked to IndiGo Airlines, raising alarm across the civil aviation network. The Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was immediately convened at each affected airport to verify the credibility of the message.
Swift Security Response
All five airports initiated emergency security protocols, increasing surveillance across passenger terminals, baggage areas, and aircraft parking zones. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and local police units conducted detailed sweeps of the premises, though no suspicious items were found.
Following a thorough assessment, authorities confirmed the email to be a hoax, but security levels remained heightened as a precautionary measure.
Airline Statement and Ongoing Probe
While the email reportedly mentioned IndiGo, the airline clarified that operations were running normally and that it was cooperating fully with investigating agencies.
Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation said cybersecurity teams are tracking the source and origin of the threatening message, which may have been sent using spoofed addresses.
Background of Similar Threats
This is not the first time Indian airports have faced coordinated email threats. In recent months, similar hoax messages have targeted airports in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, each prompting temporary disruptions and enhanced scrutiny.
Authorities have urged passengers to remain calm while confirming that all flights are operating safely under enhanced security measures.
