BJP Alleges Rahul Gandhi Is Backed by Foreign Social Media Ecosystem; Congress Calls It Diversion Tactic

A fresh political confrontation erupted on Thursday as the BJP accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and his team of creating “foreign-backed narratives” to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s democratic institutions. The Congress promptly hit back, calling the allegations an attempt to divert public attention from serious issues like “vote chori,” faulty voter lists, and the deaths of Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

BJP’s Allegations

BJP national spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra claimed that several X (formerly Twitter) accounts — allegedly linked to the Congress and left-leaning groups — were being operated from foreign countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore, Europe, and the United States.

Patra said these accounts were actively spreading misinformation regarding the Election Commission, the BJP-RSS, and PM Modi, especially on topics such as the Congress’s allegation of “vote chori” and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

He displayed screenshots of various foreign-operated X handles and accused the Congress of running an overseas digital ecosystem designed to “confuse the country.” According to Patra, these details surfaced due to a new transparency feature introduced by X, which reveals an account’s location and creation date.

Congress Responds Strongly

The Congress dismissed the allegations, accusing the BJP of deflecting attention from real concerns. Party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate pointed out that even several BJP-linked accounts — including the official Gujarat BJP handle — appear to be operated from foreign locations.

Shrinate questioned whether these accounts would also be categorized as “anti-India,” and argued that the BJP was trying to suppress legitimate questions surrounding alleged voter fraud, errors in electoral rolls, and the reported deaths of 26 BLOs.

She further alleged that the BJP is “the chief architect of a large voter scam,” calling the ruling party’s accusations a strategic distraction.
