The Bihar Assembly election, held amid opposition allegations of large-scale “voter deletions,” delivered a decisive victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The coalition secured over 200 seats, paving the way for Nitish Kumar’s tenth term as chief minister.
New data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday reveals that the NDA won four of the five seats that recorded both the highest and lowest voter deletions during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The Congress managed to secure one seat.
Highest Voter Deletions: NDA Dominates
The ECI data highlights that several constituencies saw tens of thousands of voters removed from the rolls after they were marked “ineligible.” Yet, in four of the top five seats with the highest deletions, NDA candidates emerged victorious.
1. Gopalganj
- Voter deletions: 56,793
- BJP’s Subhash Singh defeated Congress’s Om Prakash Singh by nearly 28,900 votes.
2. Purnia (Seemanchal region)
- Voter deletions: 50,767
- BJP’s Vijay Kumar Khemka defeated Congress’s Jitendra Kumar by 33,222 votes.
3. Motihari
- Voter deletions: 49,747
- BJP’s Pramod Kumar beat RJD’s Dewa Gupta by a massive 92,517 votes.
4. Kuchaikote
- Voter deletions: 43,226
- JD(U)’s Amrendra Kumar defeated Congress’s Nari Narayan Singh by 24,491 votes.
One Exception: Kishanganj
The only non-NDA win among the five highest-deletion seats was Kishanganj, where around 42,940 voters were removed.
- Congress’s Qamrul Hoda defeated BJP’s Sweety Singh by 76,875 votes.
Lowest Voter Deletions: NDA Again Leads
Among the five seats with the least number of deletions, the NDA once again captured four—two by the BJP and two by the LJP. The Congress won one seat.
Political Context
The opposition had accused the Election Commission and the BJP of attempting to influence the polls through “mass voter deletions.” However, the new ECI data indicates that the NDA performed strongly in both extremes—constituencies with the highest and lowest voter removals.
The results further solidify the NDA’s dominance in Bihar and reinforce the mandate that enabled Nitish Kumar’s return as chief minister for a historic tenth time.
