‘Absolutely Wrong’: BCCI Clarifies Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future Amid Farewell Speculation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed widespread speculation about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s possible retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) after the upcoming Australia series.

Speaking to ANI, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla rubbished reports suggesting that the Australia tour could be the duo’s final ODI assignment. He said, “It is absolutely wrong to say that this is their last ODI series. They are great batsmen, and it depends on the players as to when they have to retire.”

The clarification comes amid growing chatter about Kohli and Rohit’s long-term future in limited-overs cricket following their retirement from Test cricket in May. Both players, who remain two of India’s biggest cricketing icons, are set to play a crucial role in the upcoming tour of Australia — a series that has often brought out their best performances.

According to BCCI’s current schedule, India are lined up to play 27 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup, with nine matches planned before January 2026. The selectors and team management reportedly see both stalwarts as integral to the team’s ODI plans, depending on form and fitness.

Kohli and Rohit’s record in Australia

Australia has historically been a happy hunting ground for both batting greats.

  • Virat Kohli: 1327 runs in 29 ODIs at an average of 51.04, including five centuries.
  • Rohit Sharma: 1328 runs in 30 ODIs at an average of 53.12, also with five centuries.

Both players are expected to depart shortly for the high-profile Australia tour, with India eyeing a strong start to their overseas campaign.
