The ongoing LPG shortage in Tamil Nadu is beginning to significantly impact the food industry, with hotels turning to alternative cooking methods like firewood and induction stoves—leading to rising food prices across the state.

As the crisis unfolds during the festive Ramzan season, one of the biggest changes felt by consumers has been the increase in the price of biryani, a staple dish during Eid celebrations.

🍲 Hotels Shift to Firewood, Costs Increase

With commercial LPG cylinders in short supply, many hotels—especially in Chennai—have switched to firewood for cooking. While this traditional method is known to enhance flavour, it has also brought higher operational costs due to the surge in firewood prices.

Hotel associations estimate that nearly 90 percent of establishments are struggling to maintain profits, with business dropping by around 30 percent in Chennai and 10 percent in other parts of the state.

To manage costs and resources, some restaurants have begun centralising food preparation in bulk kitchens before distributing meals to their outlets. Others have adopted induction cooking to reduce dependence on LPG.

The shortage has also forced hotels to scale back their offerings. Deep-fried items have been temporarily removed from menus, while certain dishes like dosas are no longer available throughout the day.

Restaurants are prioritising items that require less fuel or can be reheated efficiently, such as chapatis and parottas, in an effort to cope with the ongoing crisis.

The LPG crunch has also altered how families celebrate Ramzan and Eid. Traditionally, large family gatherings featuring elaborate meals have been a key part of the festival.

However, this year, many households are opting for smaller gatherings and preparing limited quantities of food at home due to rising costs and fuel shortages.

Residents say that instead of hosting extended family, celebrations have become more modest, reflecting the economic pressure caused by the crisis.

📊 Industry Outlook Remains Uncertain

Industry leaders warn that food prices are likely to rise further if the LPG shortage continues. With both LPG and firewood costs increasing, hotels may have no choice but to pass on the additional expenses to consumers.

The situation is further compounded by reduced customer footfall during exam season, adding to the financial strain on restaurant owners.

Overall, the LPG crisis—linked to disruptions in global energy supplies—has begun to reshape not just the food industry but also everyday life and festive traditions in Tamil Nadu.
