New Delhi: The Indian Navy is escorting a vessel carrying 40,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to India through the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring the safe passage of critical energy supplies amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Government sources confirmed that the LPG carrier, identified as Shivalik, is currently being guided by the Indian Navy through the strategically important waterway.
Officials also indicated that another LPG ship is expected to begin its journey toward India through the Strait of Hormuz within the next six hours, highlighting continued efforts to maintain steady energy supplies despite the regional conflict.
Safe Passage Secured Through Diplomatic Talks
The development comes shortly after reports emerged that Iran has agreed to allow Indian vessels to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, even as the route remains restricted for many Western and Israeli tankers and container ships.
According to sources, the arrangement was reached following multiple rounds of diplomatic discussions between India and Iran.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held three rounds of talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, focusing on ensuring safe maritime passage for Indian energy shipments.
Following these discussions:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian
- Jaishankar and Araghchi conducted additional follow-up talks to finalise the understanding
Importance of the Strait of Hormuz for India
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes, connecting oil and gas producers in the Middle East with global markets.
For India, the waterway is particularly important, as around 90% of the country’s natural gas imports pass through the strait.
Any disruption to shipping in the region can significantly impact India’s energy security, fuel supplies and domestic prices.
Energy Supplies Under Close Watch
The Indian government and navy are closely monitoring the situation in the Gulf region to ensure the uninterrupted flow of essential energy resources.
The escort mission underscores India’s efforts to protect key supply routes and maintain stable energy imports during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
