Amid the surge of skincare trends and frequent product launches, dermatologists are urging consumers to simplify their routines and focus on essentials rather than excess. According to Dr Sweety Darall Tomar, a minimalist skincare routine—when followed consistently—can deliver healthier and more sustainable results.

Dr Tomar, founder of Skinisma Aesthetics, said the foundation of effective skincare lies in understanding one’s skin type, whether oily, dry, acne-prone, or sensitive. She emphasised that overusing multiple products can irritate the skin and disrupt its natural barrier, rather than improve it.

Experts note that every skincare routine should prioritise three core steps: cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. Dr Tomar recommends starting with a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, excess oil, and pollutants without stripping the skin of its protective oils. This should be followed by a moisturiser tailored to individual skin needs to maintain hydration and support the skin barrier.

Sunscreen, she added, remains the most critical yet often neglected step. Daily application of a broad-spectrum SPF is essential to prevent premature ageing, pigmentation, and long-term risks such as skin cancer.

For those looking to add an extra step, Dr Tomar advises minimal and informed choices. A Vitamin C serum in the morning may help brighten the skin and reduce pigmentation, while retinol or chemical exfoliants used at night can target acne and fine lines—preferably under professional guidance.

Dermatologists say minimalist routines work by reducing inflammation, preventing product overload, and allowing the skin to repair itself naturally. As Dr Tomar summarised, healthy skin does not require an extensive regimen, but the right products used consistently.
