5.4 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Kolkata, Residents Rush Outdoors

Kolkata experienced strong tremors on Friday afternoon after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Agargaon in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The quake’s epicentre was located south-west of the BMD Seismic Centre, according to officials cited by ANI.

The tremors, though brief, were widely felt across Kolkata and nearby areas, sparking panic among residents. People in high-rise apartments, office complexes and crowded marketplaces reported noticeable shaking, including swaying ceiling fans, rattling windows and vibrating furniture.

Many residents quickly stepped out of buildings as a precaution. Social media platforms were flooded with posts showing earthquake alerts on mobile phones, along with videos capturing people gathering in open spaces.

Authorities have not reported any casualties or significant property damage so far.

The incident follows another recent seismic event earlier this month. On February 3, tremors were felt in Kolkata after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had confirmed that the epicentre of that quake was located in Myanmar and that further analysis was underway to determine precise details.

While Friday’s tremors were short-lived, the back-to-back seismic activity has raised awareness among residents about earthquake preparedness and safety measures in the region.
